A deliciously sweet nutty snack that is enjoyed during the Sinhala and Tamil New Year with the season of April, Aluwa is also referred to as the Sri Lankan cashew slice. A simple dessert and sweetmeat that is easy to make or available from Lakpura, Aluwa is prepared using a combination of roasted rice flour, jaggery or treacle, few roasted cashew pieces and some cardamom spice for fragrance. Its texture is similar to cookie dough while it is traditionally served as square or diamond shape pieces.
From roasting the rice flour to melting the jaggery and to mixing everything up to a fine consistency, Aluwa has to be made precisely according to recipes that have been passed on from family members. The Lakpura Aluwa pieces are made in fresh batches while adhering to safety and hygienic regulations. Aluwa is also sometimes referred to as Kadju Aluwa or Kiri Aluwa.
