Hand crafted and hand painted – a handicraft industry that has been passed through generations depicting the colourful culture of Sri Lanka, The Fire Demon Mask is apotropaic which means its main purpose is to ward off evil. This particular mask is also used in various festivals and cultural dances. The Ginidal Raksha mask also known as the fire devil mask represents the emotion “anger” which is why the main colours that you prominently see are red, yellow and orange. The bulging eyes and protruding tongue is meant to symbolize the various types of demons.

These Raksha masks are also the final aspect of the Kolam Ritual and they are used as a form of tribute to the Rakshasas, a race that once ruled ancient Sri Lanka. It is also believed that the possession of these masks will attract good fortune while warding off the bad. The masks are made of kaduru wood while the paint is acrylic.
