Caves
Sri Lanka is home to fascinating caves rich in history and natural beauty. The Dambulla Cave Temple, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, showcases ancient Buddhist murals and statues. The Batadombalena and Fa Hien caves hold prehistoric significance, with evidence of early human habitation. These caves offer a glimpse into Sri Lanka’s cultural and geological heritage.
Kithulgala Belilena Caves
The town of Kithulgala is a known attraction for its wet zone rain forest, white water rafting and the prehistoric Belilena Caves. These ancient caves are located about 8km away from the town area of Kithulgala at an altitude of over 2000 ft above sea level. The area is home to a plethora of wildlife while the trek towards the caves is an adventure of its own. A site of profound archaeological importance and natural splendour, this cave provides evidence of ancient human habitation.
Excavations conducted at the Belilena Caves by the Department of Archaeology suggest that several fossils and tools were unearthed here while they are believed to be more than 32,000 years old. Skeletal remains which have been discovered here are over 16,000 years old while they are known to be remains of the ʺBalangoda Manʺ (Homo sapiens balangodensis), a prehistoric human species unique to Sri Lanka. Cultural remains discovered alongside the skeletal fragments include geometric microliths, plants and animals (which may have been a part of their diet), shell pendants and shark beads which may have been used as personal ornaments.
The Balangoda Man, according to excavations is estimated to have had thick skulls, depressed noses, heavy jaws, short necks and noticeably large teeth. These skeletal fragments that were occupied during different periods have indicated a rare biological resemblance and the likelihood of a biological continuum to the present day Veddas an indigenous community in rural Sri Lanka.
The cave's interiors consist of quite fascinating rock formations, underground streams and a calm ambience that automatically takes you to a time that has been forgotten over the years. The part of the cave beyond the lake is still unexplored to this day.
