Commonly known as Red Sandalwood or Red Sanders (Pterocarpus santalinus) is known as Rath Handun in Sri Lanka. Red Sandalwood Powder is somewhat of a coarse powder made from the wood of the red sandalwood tree and is widely known for its cooling, astringent and anti-inflammatory properties. The heart wood is used for the powder which is not mixed with other plant powders while health benefits include mainly for the skin starting from skin pigmentation, eczema, burns, acne and scar removal, sunburn relief, insect defender and as an anti-aging remedy.
It's known to have the potential to have a positive effect on people with diabetes, while it also boasts of gastro protective and wound healing properties as well. In some countries the heartwood powder is used as a red food colouring agent especially in commercial level sauces and spice blends. The bioactive compounds give the heartwood its vibrant colour making it valuable in most remedies.
