One of the main New Year Sweetmeats that is served during Avurudhu festivities and various ceremonial events, Mung Kavum is a delicious must have and must try for anyone who loves Sri Lankan cuisine. A favourite among many locals, this unique Mung Kavum sweet is prepared using a special combination of green gram flour, kithul jaggery or treacle and a batter consisting of rice flour and turmeric to give it that golden yellow colour.
The green gram and treacle mixture which is sweet and gooey after cooked to a certain consistency is cut into diamond shaped pieces and dunked into the rice batter and fried till golden brown. The crunch when you enjoy your first bite and then the sweetness that follows is definitely something to look forward to. A little bit of cardamom powder in the mix makes a difference too.
