July
July continues the southwest monsoon season, bringing rain to the southwestern and southern regions of Sri Lanka. However, the eastern and northern parts of the island enjoy relatively dry and pleasant weather, making them prime destinations for various activities. This month is ideal for exploring the east coast’s marine and wildlife opportunities while experiencing the lush, rejuvenated landscapes.
National Park Private Safaris
With the southwest monsoon in full swing, safaris in the east and north are particularly rewarding:
- Wilpattu National Park: The park benefits from the rains, enhancing its natural beauty and providing good conditions for spotting leopards, elephants, and diverse bird species.
- Wasgamuwa National Park: Offers a lush environment ideal for seeing elephants and a variety of birdlife.
- Minneriya National Park: Although the Great Elephant Gathering begins later, the park still offers good sightings of smaller herds and other wildlife.
- Hurulu Eco Park: A serene spot to view elephants and enjoy the lush landscape rejuvenated by the rains.
Discovery Kitesurfing Course (Kalpitiya)
Kalpitiya remains a top destination for kitesurfing in July. The monsoon winds create excellent conditions for both beginners and advanced kitesurfers. The lagoon’s consistent winds and flat waters offer a thrilling experience, while the season’s dynamic weather adds an exciting element to the sport.
Deep Sea Fishing Boat Tour
In July, the east coast continues to be the prime location for deep-sea fishing. Trincomalee and Nilaveli offer calm seas and good fishing conditions. Anglers can target species such as marlin, tuna, and barracuda, with the warm waters making for a productive fishing season.
Scuba Diving
July is an excellent time for scuba diving on the east coast. The waters around Trincomalee and Nilaveli remain clear, offering superb visibility to explore vibrant coral reefs, shipwrecks, and an array of marine life. The warm water temperature adds to the comfort of diving.
Snorkeling
The east coast provides ideal conditions for snorkeling in July. Trincomalee and Nilaveli offer clear waters and rich marine life, making it a great month for observing colorful coral reefs, tropical fish, and sea turtles in their natural habitat.
Dolphin Watching Boat Tour
Trincomalee continues to be a hotspot for dolphin watching in July. Boat tours provide the opportunity to see pods of dolphins playing and leaping in the calm waters, creating a memorable experience for wildlife enthusiasts.
Whale Watching Boat Tour
July remains a good month for whale watching on the east coast. Trincomalee is the ideal location for spotting blue whales and sperm whales as they migrate through the area. The calm seas and favorable weather conditions enhance the chances of sightings.
Hot Air Ballooning (Dambulla, Kandalama, Habarana, Sigiriya)
Hot air ballooning is limited in July due to the southwest monsoon. However, if weather conditions allow in the Cultural Triangle (such as Sigiriya or Dambulla), an early morning balloon ride can offer breathtaking views of the lush, rain-enhanced landscapes.
