Districts of Sri Lanka

In Sri Lanka, districts are the second-level administrative divisions, and are included in a province. There are 25 districts organized into 9 provinces. Each district is administered under a District Secretary, who is appointed by the central government. The main tasks of the District Secretariat involve coordinating communications and activities of the central government and Divisional Secretariats. The District Secretariat is also responsible for implementing and monitoring development projects at the district level and assisting lower-level subdivisions in their activities, as well as revenue collection and coordination of elections in the district. A district is divided into a number of Divisional Secretary's Divisions (commonly known as DS divisions), which are in turn subdivided in to 14,022 Grama Niladhari Divisions. There are 231 DS divisions in the country.

  • Ampara District is located in the south east of Sri Lanka in the Eastern Province. It has an area of 4,415 square kilometres (1,705 sq mi). It is bounded by Batticaloa and Polonnaruwa districts from north, Indian Ocean from east, Hambantota District from south, Badulla and Matale districts from northwest and by the Monaragala District from west and southeast.

  • Anuradhapura is a major city in Sri Lanka. It is the capital city of North Central Province, Sri Lanka and the capital of Anuradhapura District. Anuradhapura is one of the ancient capitals of Sri Lanka, famous for its well-preserved ruins of an ancient Sinhala civilization.

  • Badulla is a district in Uva Province, Sri Lanka. The entire land area of the Badulla district is 2,861 km² and total population is 837,000. The district is bounded by the districts of Monaragala and Rathnapura on the East & South, by Ampara and Kandy districts on the North and by Nuwara Eliya and Matale on the West.

  • Batticaloa is in the eastern coast of Sri Lanka on a flat coastal plain boarded by the Indian Ocean in the east occupies a central part of the eastern Sri Lanka. Its average elevation is around 5 meters. Batticaloa district has three lagoons such as Batticaloa Lagoon, Valaichchenai Lagoon, and Vakari (Panichchankerni) Lagoon.

  • Colombo was known to ancient traders 2,000 years ago. It was made the capital of the island when Sri Lanka was ceded to the British Empire in 1815, and its status as capital was retained when the nation became independent in 1948. In 1978, when administrative functions were moved to Sri Jayawardenepura Kotte, Colombo was designated as the commercial capital of Sri Lanka.

  • Its area is 1,652 km2 (638 sq mi): 35 km2 (14 sq mi) is water and 1,617 km2 (624 sq mi) is land. Galle District bounded on the north by Benthara river, south and west by the Indian Ocean and east by Matara and Ratnapura districts. The topography of Galle District is very much dissent.

  • Gampaha District is divided into 13 Divisional Secretary's Division (DS Divisions), each headed by a Divisional Secretary. The DS Divisions are further sub-divided into 1,177 Grama Niladhari Divisions (GN Divisions).

  • Hambantota District is located on the southeastern coast of Sri Lanka. It has an area of 2,593 km² and Hambantota features a tropical wet and dry climate and there is no true dry season, but there is significantly less rain from JanuaryMarch and again from JuneAugust. The heaviest rain falls in October and November.

  • Jaffna District is located in the far north of Sri Lanka in the Northern Province and occupies most of the Jaffna Peninsula. It has an area of 1,025 square kilometres (396 sq mi). It is divided into four areas geographically

  • Kalutara District is located in the south west of Sri Lanka and has an area of 1,598 square kilometres (617 sq mi). It is bounded by Colombo District from north, Ratnapura District from east, Galle District from south, and by the Indian Ocean from west.

    Kalutara District 
  • Kandy District is a district of the Central Province of Sri Lanka. Its area is 1906.3 km².The capital of the district is Kandy.

    Kandy District 
  • The District of Kegalle is situated in between the central highlands and western southern plains and has an enchanting environment. The height of the western region is 50 m (160 ft) above sea level while the eastern region exceeds 1,800 m (5,900 ft). Rubber cultivation has stretched over most of the area of the District and minor export crops from the district include coffee, cocoa, pepper, clove and nutmeg.

    Kegalle District 
  • Between 5th century BC and 13th century AD present day Kilinochchi District was part of Rajarata. Much of Kilinochchi District was thereafter part of the pre-colonial Jaffna kingdom. The district then came under Portuguese, Dutch and British control. In 1815 the British gained control of the entire island of Ceylon.

  • Kurunegala is a district in North Western Province, Sri Lanka. Consists of 4812.7 km2 48,1270 Hectares and Consists 30 Divisional Secretariats, 1610 Grama Niladari Divisions and 4476 total Villages.

    Kurunegala District 
  • Mannar District is unique in its vegetation and wildlife, contrasting with rest of Sri Lanka. Mannar Island is one of the few places in Sri Lanka where baobab trees thrive. Monkeys love the fruit and hence the tree is sometimes known as the monkey-bread tree.

    Mannar District 
  • The district is considered as the central region of the island and has a total area of 1,993 km2 (770 sq mi). It is in the northern part of the Central Province. It is bounded to the north by Anuradhapura, east by PolonnaruwaBadulla and Ampara, west by Kurunagala and to the south by Kandy Districts.

    Matale District 
  • In the 16th and 18th centuries, Matara was ruled by the Portuguese and the Dutch. Culture and architecture can still be seen in the area. The popular Lighthouse in Point Dondra was built by the Dutch and is considered to be one of the most beautiful and oldest lighthouses in Sri Lanka.

  • Monaragala is a town located in Monaragala District, Uva Province, Sri Lanka. It is the largest town in Monaragala District [citation needed] and is located 57.3 km (35.6 mi) southeast of Badulla, the capital city of Uva Province.

    Monaragala District 
  • Vanni District was later renamed Mullaitivu District and then Vavuniya District. The district was colonised in the second half of the 18th century by residents from Jaffna Peninsula, primarily from Alaveddy, Udupiddy and Navaly.

  • Nuwara Eliya District is a district in Central Province, Sri Lanka, centered on the tourist city of Nuwara Eliya.

  • Polonnaruwa District is one of the 25 districts of Sri Lanka, the second level administrative division of the country. It is also one of the two districts of North Central Province and has an area of 3,293 km².

    Polonnaruwa District 
  • Puttalam is a district situated near to the west coast of Sri Lanka. It has an area of 3,072 km2 (1,186 sq mi). Along with the Kurunegala District, it formulates the North Western Province of Sri Lanka.

    Puttalam District 
  • Ratnapura is a district of Sri Lanka in the Sabaragamuwa Province. The gem-mining centre of Sri Lanka is also a major crossroad between southern plains and the hill country to the east. A bustling market city servicing most of the surrounding towns. Many of the prominent gem dealers in Sri Lanka operate from this town.

    Ratnapura District 
  • The population of the district, like the rest of the east and north, has been heavily affected by the civil war. The war killed an estimated 100,000 people. Several hundred thousand Sri Lankan Tamils, possibly as much as one million, emigrated to the West during the war.

    Trincomalee District 
  • Vavuniya District is one of the 25 districts of Sri Lanka, the second level administrative division of the country. The district is administered by a District Secretariat headed by a District Secretary.
